Twitter Developers reported, which from now on will block the use of animated PNG files (APNG). The fact is that this format does not take into account the autorun settings (for example, automatic GIF playback can be turned off) and can pose a threat to people “sensitive to moving and blinking images”, including those suffering from epilepsy. APNG files previously uploaded by users are not affected.
So, until recently, due to a bug, Twitter allowed users to add several APNG files to their messages at once, which could cause problems not only for epileptics, but also problems with application performance on various devices.
Attention to this issue has recently been attracted by members of the Epilepsy Foundation, who applied to US law enforcement agencies, complaining of attacks that the attackers carried out using the name of the fund and its hashtgs. Trolls purposely published flashing pictures that could provoke seizures in people with epilepsy. Moreover, this was done during the month of awareness of epilepsy, when people with similar diseases are most likely to follow the news on the social networks of the respective organizations. The fund emphasized that many people do not even suspect that they have photosensitivity until they have an attack.
It is worth saying that this problem cannot be called new at all. Back in 2008, the Epilepsy Foundation website was subjected to a hacker attack. Then the attackers deliberately placed hundreds of images and links to pages with blinking pictures on the resource, which cause severe migraines and seizures in some users.
Also in 2016 in a similar way was attacked renowned journalist and writer Kurt Eichenwald. Then, after the journalist criticized Donald Trump, a Twitter user sent Eichenwald a message with an animated, blinking image and comment: "You deserve a fit for your posts." Because of this message, Eichenwald really had an attack, due to which he was bedridden for several days. As a result, Eichenwald turned to law enforcement, the user who sent him a dangerous message was found and accused committing a criminal offense.
