Kaspersky Lab analysts countedthat in the first half of 2020 the number of attacks on educational resources in Russia increased sharply. So, in the period from January to June 2020, this indicator was higher than the values of the previous year by 350% or more.
Experts noted the largest gap in January: the number of DDoS attacks on educational portals increased by 550% compared to January 2019. At the end of the academic year, in May, every second DDoS attack (49%) was directed at the educational sector, and already in June the figure naturally decreased, but still remained quite high – 19%.
In addition, in the first half of 2020, experts recorded an increase in the number of phishing pages imitating popular educational platforms and fake video conferencing applications. From January to June, 168,500 unique users of Kaspersky Lab products encountered such malicious resources.
“Typically, cybercriminals targeting educational portals“ go on vacation ”until September. This time, the situation was affected by the pandemic: all students and schoolchildren switched to distance learning, starting to use digital resources even more actively. As a result, the number of possible targets for DDoS attacks increased, and the organizers of phishing campaigns “went to science,” keeping in mind the increased popularity of various Internet services for training. So far, we do not make forecasts for a decrease in fraudulent activity in this area – autumn is traditionally distinguished by high numbers. In addition, many schools and institutes plan to preserve the practice of online classes, ”comments Alexander Gutnikov, a cybersecurity expert at Kaspersky Lab.
