Windows updates have often turned into memes. I think everyone has heard that Microsoft’s system once decided to enable the update on medical equipment during surgery. Of course, such extreme cases are very rare, but they talk a bit about the actual process of updating. And as users point out, in the case of Windows 10, there is still a lot of things to improve in this process.
Researchers Jason Morris, Ingolf Becker and Simon Parkin of University College London conducted a study on the process of updating Windows 10, the results of which were published in the document entitled “In Control with No Control: Perceptions and Reality of Windows 10 Home Edition.
From the data collected by the researchers, one simple conclusion can be drawn: the upgrade in Windows 10 still causes problems for many home users. The default settings for it do not match most consumers, and the unexpected restart of the machine without warning still occurs.
It’s better than it was.
93% of respondents use Windows 10 Home Edition. 53% of them claim that the update in the latest version is simpler than before. Only 8% of respondents have the opposite opinion. 43% of them also said that the updates cause fewer problems than Windows 8.1 and older.
But there are still problems.
What is wrong? 97% of users have indicated the hours of active use without hesitation. This is a specific time period during which the computer will not restart automatically as part of the update. They are set by default from 8:00 to 17:00. While such hours should fit all people who work on a given computer, in the case of home users they are simply a fake. Most of them use the computer in the evening and not knowing about the possibility of changing the hours of active use, they must reckon with the possibility of a sudden restart of the machine.
A large proportion of people also have problems understanding Windows Update. They have a problem with distinguishing monthly, minor updates from huge updates of the entire system, which take place twice a year (last was October Update, the future was 19H1). Due to the number of files, the latter require much more time. However, without knowing about it, users allow the installation of updates expecting a few minutes break. As a result, they have to give up working on a computer for a long time.
