British edition The sun told an interesting story about a pair of users of the Samsung Galaxy S10. Lisa and Wes Nielson found that thanks to a bug, you can trick the device’s fingerprint scanner and unlock the phone. Recall that the Galaxy S10 and S10 + were the first smartphones of the company that create a 3D model of a fingerprint using ultrasound, and an improved and more reliable scanner is located under the device’s display.
The problem was discovered by chance when Lisa received the phone as a gift from her husband and decided to protect the screen with a special film. Soon, she discovered that although only her own fingerprint was registered in the biometric settings of the device, the device unlocks when using any fingerprint. So, her husband and sister managed to unlock the device without problems, although their fingerprints were never registered in the system.
Apparently, the root of the problem was precisely the protection pasted onto the screen. The film somehow disorientates the fingerprint scanner, allowing anyone to unlock the device. Representatives of Samsung told reporters that the company is already conducting an internal investigation on this case, while the worried user has so far been advised to buy only certified accessories.
Journalists Forbes, also interested in this case, write that the problem is probably related to the material of the protective film. Obviously, it retains the fingerprint of the owner of the phone, and as a result, any pressure on the screen in the sensor area unlocks the device.
Interestingly, reports of problems due to screen protectors appeared earlier, but they usually referred to tempered glass protection because they leave a small air gap that interferes with scanning. In such cases, it is recommended that you use Samsung certified products.
However, plastic or silicone protection can also cause problems, as it makes it difficult to read fingerprints. In such cases, it is recommended to press the sensor harder.
Note that this is not the first time that Samsung managed to deceive the biometric protection of the flagship Samsung. So, in the spring of this year it became known that the smartphone does not do very well with face recognition. It turned out that you can fool a device using a regular photo or video.
