RBC Journalists talked with representatives of major Russian Internet providers (Rostelecom, Transtelecom, Akado Telecom and VimpelCom) and found that over the week of March 23-29, traffic consumption increased by 10-30% compared to other business days 2020 of the year.
Internet traffic is gradually increasing due to subscribers who are forced to stay at home, as well as due to the emergence of new consumers who switch from mobile Internet to wired, Svetlana Belykh, head of the Akado Telecom press service, explained to RBC. She clarified that on March 25, daily traffic (from 12:00 to 18:00) increased by 23% compared with the previous week, and on March 30 – another 12%.
Transtelecom talked about a 10–12% increase in home Internet consumption compared to the previous month, and 7–10% increase in Rostelecom, depending on the region.
The representative of VimpelCom Yekaterina Kazachenko noted not only the growing popularity of broadband access (20-30% in Russia), but also the increased number of traditional voice calls – by 15%.
According to the representative of MTS Alexey Merkutov, from March 16 fixed-line traffic grew by 30% in Moscow and the region compared to working days this year. The greatest load falls on the daytime from 12 to 16 hours, as well as the evening, after 19:00. The operator notes an unusual increase in traffic on social networks and instant messengers – almost four times. The share of traffic of social networks and instant messengers in the total amount of data transferred in recent days has almost doubled – up to 18%.
Wifire's director of business development for the mass market (part of MegaFon) Andrei Egorov claims that at the end of last week in Russia, daily traffic consumption increased by 40% in the cities of the company’s coverage area compared to the usual everyday load. The largest increase was noted in the Moscow region – up to 60%, in Murmansk, Cheboksary and Yekaterinburg it amounted to 50%. The amount of time watching digital TV equaled the activity on a regular weekend. “We see that the daily Internet traffic has grown, but the evening has hardly changed,” Yegorov said.
Despite the increased load on the network, providers assure that they are not observing failures, and their networks are ready for increased traffic.
