In fact, Bing will become the default search engine in Chrome. The only exception when the extension is not installed is if Bing is already the default search engine.
The extension will ship with new Office 365 ProPlus installations or when upgrading existing installations. Even worse, according to the official announcement, similar steps are planned in the future for Firefox.
The forced installation of the extension will be timed to coincide with the release of Office 365 ProPlus 2002, which is scheduled for release in February, and the expanded deployment in March of this year. So, users in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Great Britain and the United States will be the first to encounter this innovation, and after that a turn of other countries of the world will come.
This news, for obvious reasons, caused a flurry of criticism from system administrators. On social networks, on Reddit and github (1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5) you can already find many negative posts on this topic.

“What were you thinking? Is this a return to IE browser warriors or something like that? This is an amazing abuse that should NOT be done under any circumstances, ” writes another user on github.
Anticipating a wave of negativity, Microsoft has already prepared instruction, which describes how Office 365 ProPlus customers can opt out of installing an extension using the Office Deployment Tool or Group Policy. Also ready removal instructions extensions, in case the system administrator did not bother to block the installation in advance.
