Cybersecurity has always been one of the priorities at the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU), one of the leaders in this field in Russia. More than 20 years ago, SPbPU was the first among civilian universities to train information security specialists: in 1997, the Department of Information Security of Computer Systems (IBKS) was created. Among her graduates are Yandex Security Director, Bloomberg Security Consultant, Kaspersky Lab employees, Gazprom Neft PJSC, NeoBIT LLC, Google, Cisco, Oracle, Siemens.
Today in SPbPU created Institute of Cybersecurity and Information Protection (ICB) under the guidance of Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, laureate of the St. Petersburg Government Prize in the field of education and the Russian Government Prize in the field of science and technology Dmitry Petrovich Zegzhd, head of the scientific school “Management of Security and Sustainable Functioning of Cyberphysical Systems”.
Practical-oriented training with the use of gaming technologies is conducted at the SDI. Students will gain skills in penetration testing, search for vulnerabilities and counteract cyber attacks, including targeted ones, as well as learn the technologies for their implementation. This will be achieved by using the concepts of “virtual laboratory” and “virtual training ground”. Thanks to close cooperation with industry representatives, virtual landfills will be able to simulate the infrastructure of complex industrial facilities. Joint scientific and technical projects conducted by the ICB with representatives of business and industry will allow students to get unique skills in working with related subject areas, specific security mechanisms and cyber threats at the training stage.
IKB has rich experience in using a practice-oriented approach: in 2012, the then IBS department organized annual project NeoQUESTuniting information security experts from all over Russia and a number of foreign countries (Belarus, Armenia, Ukraine). NeoQUEST includes an individual CTF competition, hands-on lectures and workshops on the most relevant cybersecurity topics.
The procedure for admission of applicants in 2020 was formed in October 2019, so for now, do not look for ICB on the website of the admission campaign of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and the State Service. But applicants should not worry: all applicants for a specialty starting with “ten” (03/10/01, 05/10/01, 05/10/03, 10/05/04, and 10/04/01), and successfully passing the competition, will study at the IKB! Training will be conducted in three areas: undergraduate, specialty and graduate.
According to statistics, the direction of "information security" is firmly included in the top 10 areas, whose graduates work in their specialty. Therefore, one should not worry about the successful and well-paid employment of graduates of the ICB – all the leading Russian and foreign companies actively implementing digital technologies are interested in them.
In the future, ICD will increase the number of graduate cybersecurity specialists. After all, who, if not they, will be able to deceive the artificial intelligence system, prevent a targeted cyber attack on a critical infrastructure object and find a vulnerability that allows you to remotely hack an unmanned vehicle. How do you like it, Elon Musk?
