Building your own OS distributions is a favorite Linux entertainment. It is believed that Windows users lack such an attractive opportunity to spend free time. But this is not so: there are ways to at least cut unnecessary components from the Windows 10 distribution, disable unnecessary functions, integrate drivers and updates into it. We’ll talk about this in today's article.
Windows users dabbled in creating customized or “lightweight” distributions of Windows at the end of the last century: for example, an article about building a minimalist distribution of Windows 98 Lite in Hacker was published twenty years ago. Surprisingly, the site of the project itself is still alive! Now the mod seems to have come to naught, but with the advent of Windows 10, the theme began to gain relevance again. On weak tablets and netbooks, the “ten” tosses and turns at the speed of a turtle, and when installing the system on old devices, there are often problems with drivers that Windows cannot find on their own.
The obvious solution suggests itself: remove unnecessary applications, disable unnecessary components, integrate drivers and all current updates directly into the distribution kit, and then cut off the automatic update system so that it does not interfere with work. If you also configure automatic installation of Windows to everything else, as described in a previous article, there will be beauty in general. And why, in fact, not?
To prepare the Windows 10 distribution, we need at least the Windows 10 distribution itself. I already told you where to get it, but I will repeat briefly: you need to download from the Microsoft website “Windows 10 Media Builder»And either save the distribution package as an ISO file, or put it on a USB flash drive. Choose the most suitable edition of the operating system – that is, the one for which you have a serial.
For the purpose of artistic sawing out of Windows everything unnecessary and adding any useful information to it, enthusiasts came up with tulza MSMG Toolkit. The utility comes in the form of a 7-Zip archive, which must be unzipped to disk while maintaining the folder structure.
For normal operation with Windows 10 images, the MSMG Toolkit utility must be running on Windows version 8.1 or 10. ESD to WIM can also be converted to Windows 7, but other functions will most likely not work.
Go to the folder where you saved the Windows 10 ISO image. You can mount this image on a virtual disk, but for our purposes it’s enough to install the free 7-Zip archiver and open the ISO file in it as a regular archive. If you recorded the image on a USB flash drive, you can simply view its contents in Explorer. Copy all folders and files from the Windows distribution to a subfolder
DVD the directory where you unpacked the MSMG Toolkit.
Now run the MSMG Toolkit using the file
Start.cmd from the utility folder and press Latin A on the keyboard to accept the license agreement, and then press Enter.
We extract and mount the image
In ancient times, Microsoft operating system distributions were packaged in Windows Image Format (WIM) images. Later, developers abandoned this standard in favor of the ESD format with an even greater compression ratio in order to save disk space. Unfortunately, most modern utilities do not know how to work with ESD; they need an image in a traditional WIM format.
Therefore, as a first step, we need to extract from the file
install.esdstored in a folder
sourcespackaged WIM image. On Windows, the console utility is responsible for this.
dism, but its use implies certain inconveniences: at least you need to wrinkle your brain well and remember the principles of working with the command line. We will go the other way.
MSMG Toolkit uses its own copy
dism the latest version, saving you from having to type long directives on the command line and puzzle over why it still doesn't work. To convert
install.esd in WIM, press key 2. The utility will offer different conversion options, you need to select Convert Install ESD image to WIM image by pressing key 2 again.
Tulsa reads the contents of the ESD and displays a list of all the Windows images that are stored inside the ESD archive.
Press the key with the number corresponding to the image of Windows with which you will continue to work. Now wait for the utility to extract the image you selected from the ESD file and export it to WIM, this will take some time. Converted Image
install.wim will be saved in the same folder
sourceswhere the source file used to be, which is automatically deleted.
Regular readers may wonder why this rather simple method of extracting WIM was not described in a previous article. Practice has shown that the Windows SIM utility for some reason unknown to science does not work well with images extracted using MSMG.
Now the extracted image needs to be mounted for further work. Press 1 (Source), and then again 1 (Select source from
Now you can safely proceed to further action.
