IT conferences – is it work or leisure? Does it make sense to go there? Why is it better to see everything yourself, and not watch the recordings of performances? My grandmother will give non-banal answers to these and other non-banal questions. After all, she visited at once two St. Petersburg IT festivals of the outgoing summer – Chaos Constructions and TechTrain.
“My dear grandson! I am writing to you from the glorious hero city of St. Petersburg. I arrived quickly. Your gifts were masterfully dragged past control; they didn’t even understand anything in all these electronic gadgets. As you asked, I’m going to the conference – I’ll sit on the sidelines, listen to what people are talking about, but I’ll tell you again. Kiss, your grandmother. "
This is the kind of message that my grandmother threw at me in Telegram. At first I did not believe that between sitting at home and cooking borsch, she would "shake the old days" and go on an independent journey. Her last trip did not end very well – seven years in prison in the United States for industrial espionage. Oh, and then shouted the headlines of the local press!
“The Soviet agent dragged through the customs a bug on the basis of EU computers.”
“In the suitcase are not dresses and slippers, but microchips and encryption!”
“Why does a young girl need so many punch cards?”
“FORTRAN is a 7-year love affair.”
I will not say that the newspaper men wrote only the truth. But the fact remains – the grandmother went to St. Petersburg and sends me daily reports. And I decided to share them with you – not everyone is sitting at the computer, you also need to “see people, show yourself”.
Spontaneity is the main feature of my grandmother. How she immediately crouched for 7 years, only crossed the ocean, only Bill Gates knows. Or maybe the truth is being written that the EU computer did not fit into ladies' luggage a bit. On what the granny also "slept." Be that as it may, I'll start with the most important.
A lot of fun
Oh, granddaughter, well, I'm tired today. Briefly tell what happened. I was just about to go to TechTrain when I met my fellow soldier, and she says that the granddaughter invited to Chaos Constructions. He reports: there is no food there, bring a che-thread of delicious. So I bring her pies to eat and to feed local hackers, maybe they’ll blab out useful things. Well, I went with her too.
Came to the round table on Embedded. Nowadays, what was embedded? If the radio tube fit in your pocket, then it’s already embedded! And now all esteemkami got yes other controllers and FPGAs – and what they just do not sculpt. Engines for marine ships – and those on microrology now work. The guys are all young, handsome, already in love with one. They speak beautifully about the fate of Russia, with pain in the soul. Like, this sphere is not very good here, many things are illiterate. Well, we got into a conversation, but “they”, somewhere abroad, better or worse? Thought, thought, discussed, discussed – yes, they came to the conclusion that not everywhere.
And I was interested, but how could it be, because the world as a whole lives well. Why is "not very everything"? And I came to the conclusion that our computer engineers are very responsible for work, they are trying to do it not as quickly, but as better, more competently. But they do not always succeed. They swear how much in vain: they say, we want to do the best, and the boss does not give “good”, or they are running out of time, or there are not enough people, or even worse. So it turns out that because of the high internal settings it seems to them that everything is bad around. But this is not so. Good with us, granddaughter. So the granddaughter of a fellow soldier also says: she studied at the Polytechnic in instrument engineering, and there was assembler, and C ++, and radio electronics in sufficient quantities.
Glad to hear that from granny. In my time, teachers couldn’t be torn off the bottle, and exams had to be passed by fundraising for the purchase of new bottles — well, cars and apartments. And there was no Internet, and there was no "Aliexpress" with cheap esteemki, and all sorts of Arduino, Raspberry Pi and Altera Cyclone too. And there was no money to buy it, even if it was sold. Life has become better, life has become happier!
But of course, there are difficulties. Mainly with production and marketing. Try to import a batch of components into Russia without notification to the FSB. In order to formalize everything, a whole legal department will be needed. And how to sell finished devices abroad? Also not always possible. And you really want to hear nonsense? Not all devices manufactured in Russia can be imported back under the guarantee – they simply will not be missed by customs. What, huh?
It’s cheaper for manufacturers to send a new one than to clear up maintainability, like this. We have to open service centers in more loyal countries. Of course, with such cards the global party cannot be won. So our specialists are looking abroad. And with this, not everything is as complicated as it might seem: it is not very important for foreigners who to order from.
Mentality also plays a role. Take Asians – they prefer to work with "their". Their way of life, culture, worldview are very different from ours. But Europeans, on the contrary, do not care who to work with, if only it would be of high quality. However, they make high demands on all kinds of product and production certificates. But it depends more on the customer himself – everything is decided by “personal chemistry”. Almost like in a relationship. Top managers will like each other – that means they will sign a contract. And it doesn’t matter that people from different continents. The main thing is faith in the success of a common cause.
I twist and turn the conference program in my hands, and suddenly the theme “Monitoring in the data center” catches my eye. I went to see, but I couldn’t open the door, it was closed from the inside! I never got into the hall. And in the next room there was a visual lecture on master keys. Oh, and I regret that I do not have their skills, otherwise I would have sorted out the castle in two ways. In general, they did everything right: the data center is a place where not everyone is allowed to enter. So, there is nothing to eavesdrop on what they monitor there.
It looks like my grandmother did not have enough access rights!
