“Do not be evil” disappeared from Google’s corporate code of behavior, and with it the intransigence of the Russian authorities has apparently also disappeared. According to the agency AFP, Google bent to them and began to censor pages according to the Kremlin’s demand.
In December last year, Roskomnadzor, the Russian media control authority, imposed on Google a fine of 500,000 rubles (less than $ 8,000) for the American company not following local recommendations and not removing results from the search engine related to banned in Russia websites.
On Google, the penalty in this amount probably did not make any impression, but Roskomnadzor threatened by the way that if Google still does not comply with local regulations, Russia will cease to comply with Google. More precisely, the company will simply be cut off from the runet.
As RIA Novosti put it, both sides entered into a “constructive dialogue”, which ended in such a way that Google started blocking websites that are on the “forbidden index” of Roskomnadzor. And you can also find him criticizing the Kremlin’s actions. According to Vedomosti, about 70 percent of all sites in this list have been blocked by Google, and the company has committed to blocking search results according to the Roskomnadzor’s Periodic Guidelines.
