ESET Company conducted a study about dating on the Internet by interviewing about 2,000 Russian users. It turned out that the status of "active search" can lead to unpleasant consequences for the reputation and wallet.
Respondents shared both positive and negative experiences searching for a soulmate on the network. In the first part of the study, the participants were asked the question: “Do you use mobile apps for dating?” 7% of respondents admitted that they use them regularly. Every fifth user sometimes visits such applications. 10% are simply interested in the profiles of other people, 37% prefer live chat, and 26% do not even know about the existence of such a way of dating.
The experts also studied the specific problems that respondents faced. It turned out that the victims of blackmail were 11% (according to the results of a multivariate survey). Fake accounts and scammers were dealt with by 45% and 34% of users, respectively.
38% of respondents received malicious links from chat buddies. Distribution of such links in chat rooms of dating applications is a rather dangerous threat, because users often lose their vigilance and download the virus under the guise of “hot XXX photos of the interlocutor”.
The popularity of services for online searching for a couple or just a soulmate is growing, which is what cybercriminals use. Despite this, users neglect their own security on the network. So, almost half of the respondents (47%) believe that the protection of mobile devices is not needed, and admitted that they do not install security software on smartphones at all.
