In the summer of 2017, the US authorities announced that the AlphaBay darknet market was closed as a result of the actions of law enforcement agencies. Then, together with AlphaBay, another marketplace, Hansa Market, was liquidated, and all this was the result of a major international operation in which the USA, Canada, Thailand, Holland, Great Britain, France, Lithuania, as well as representatives of Europol, the FBI and the Anti-Corruption Department took part. with drugs.
As the edition now writes Bleeping computer, earlier this week, one of the former marketplace moderators, 25-year-old Bryan Connor Herrell, who modeled AlphaBay from May 2016 to July 2017 and was known as Penissmith and Botah, was sentenced earlier this week.
According to judicial documentsDuring his tenure, Herrell settled more than 20,000 disputes between buyers and sellers of AlphaBay, while the moderator received payment in bitcoins from the owners of the marketplace. Herrell also made sure that there were no fraudulent attempts on the marketplace, and some AlphaBay users did not try to deceive others.
Herrell found guilty at the beginning of this year, and he faced up to 20 years in prison on charges related to organized crime. Although the sentencing was scheduled for May this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic it had to be postponed, and only this week became knownthat Herrell was eventually sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Experts from the US Department of Justice remind that it is impossible to judge the real head of AlphaBay, since Canadian citizen Alexandre Cazes is currently already dead.
In 2017, Kazes was arrested in Thailand, where he lived for several years, and after the arrest, the authorities confiscated four Lamborghinis he owned, as well as three houses, worth $ 11.7 million. In addition, during the arrest, law enforcement authorities found and seized Kazes' laptop, which was not encrypted. On the device, investigators found several text files that listed passwords and access keys for AlphaBay, AlphaBay servers, and so on.
Kazes was supposed to be extradited to the United States, but on July 12, 2017, he was found hanged in a cell in a Thai prison. According to official reports, he committed suicide.
