RiskIQ prepared a report threats among mobile apps for 2019. Among other things, the company's experts studied various catalogs of applications for Android and compiled a rating of the most dangerous of them.
The most dangerous of all was recognized 9Game (.) Com – a portal for downloading free games for Android. 9Game took first place as the application catalog with the largest number of new malvari downloads, as well as first place among application stores with the highest concentration of malvari. So, in 2019, 61,669 new malicious applications were uploaded to 9Game.
The second place in the rating of stores with the largest number of new Malvari downloads is by a large margin the official Google Play Store: 25,647 new malicious applications per year. The remaining positions are shared between the Zhushou catalog, owned by Qihoo 360, the Feral catalog, as well as Vmall, created by Huawei.
It should be noted that, despite the second place on this list, the Google Play Store did not enter the top five stores with the highest concentration of malvari, which are 9Game, Feral, Vmall, Xiaom, and Zhushou catalogs.
Moreover, although the malware still infiltrates the Google Play Store, overall the number of blacklisted apps in the store dropped by a significant 76.4% in 2019.
Researchers explain the absence of the Apple App Store on these lists simply: the thing is in the deep and individualized approach to reviewing applications that Apple uses. According to experts, this approach allows more efficient detection of the malware, than automation, which is used in most other stores.
“Apple treats its App Store as a real Fort Knox and rarely hosts dangerous applications,” the experts conclude.
At the same time, in 2019, the total number of malicious applications in the world decreased by 20% and stopped at around 170,796 (in 2018 there were 213,279 malicious applications). RiskIQ researchers consider the downward trend in the number of mobile malware to be rather strange, as the number of applications continues to grow: in 2019, 8.9 million new applications were uploaded to application stores around the world, which is 18% more than in 2018 (7, 5 million new applications).
Most of the new applications (both safe and malicious) were created by Chinese developers. So, the three most active app store downloads last year are Chinese APK GK (1,687,757 new applications), APK Pure (890,479 new applications) and APK Apps Android (809,818 new applications). The Google Play Store (714,678 new applications) and the Apple App Store (465,676 new applications) took only fourth and fifth places in this rating.
