ESET analysts conducted a survey and studied the habits of Russians regarding the use of public Wi-Fi networks. As it turned out, 74% of users connect to public Wi-Fi points. The most popular places to connect were: cafes (49% chose this option in a multivariate survey), hotels (42%), airports (34%) and shopping centers (35%).
Users also talked about why they usually connect to public Wi-Fi. So, 66% of users correspond in social networks, 43% read news, 24% check email.
Another 10% go to banking applications and even make online purchases. It is noteworthy that every fifth respondent makes audio and video calls without worrying about protecting the transmitted traffic.
Researchers recall that such activities are dangerous for personal data. For example, attackers can intercept traffic, credentials from accounts on social networks, and billing information. In addition, the creation of fake access points and the lack of encryption of the transmitted information are just some of the dangers of public Wi-Fi networks. ESET analysts advise not to forget about this and not to lose vigilance.
