March 31 is an international backup day, and Avast specialists conducted a survey to find out how often and in what way Russians make backups (and why some do not want to do this). As it turned out, 65% of Russians do not back up their data at all, risking losing it.
Of those who do not back up their data, more than half (55%) claim that they simply do not have data or files important enough for backup. Among other reasons were named:
- 26% do not know how to backup their data;
- 5% want, but forget;
- 7% want, but do not have time.
Those who do backups did the following: most Russians (42%) copy their data to the cloud storage. Another 41% of those surveyed use an external hard drive, 29% use a USB or flash drive, 15% back up their phone to a PC, and 4% back up files to a network drive.
When asked how often they copy their data, users said:
- at least once a month: 41%;
- continuously: 13%;
- every 1-6 months: 20%;
- every 6-12 months: 17%;
- less than once a year: 9%.
Interestingly, the percentage of iPhone and Android owners who copy their data is approximately the same: 48% and 50%, respectively. If we talk about the frequency, then 13% of iPhone owners and the same number of Android owners do continuous backups. Once a month, 65% of iPhone users and 44% of Android users copy their data.
The reasons that owners of Android and iOS devices have refused to back up differ little. So, both iPhone owners (48%) and Android owners (49%) believe that their data is not valuable enough for backup. And also 7% of iPhone users and such a number of Android users said that they do not have enough time for this.
At the same time, researchers note that only between February 15 and March 15, 2020 Avast protected 12,217 users from Russia from 235,465 ransomware attacks. The three most common ransomware are VirLock, WannaCry and Troldesh. That is, losing important data is not so difficult, especially considering the number of active ransomware or vipers.
“The results (of the survey) are very unexpected. The number of people who do not back up their data, and the number of people who do not know how to do it, is really surprising. Perhaps many do not know that backups can happen automatically in the background. Some people don’t do it consciously: they think it’s not worth it. Losing personal documents, photos, and videos can be very painful, but until that happens, no one understands how valuable this data was, ”said Luis Corrons, Avast IB Evangelist.
